Enbridge Pipeline 14 Spills 50,000 gallons of crude oil in Grand Marsh, WI - July 2012

Over 50,000 gallons of crude oil mixed with diluent (that contains benzene) was spilled in Grand Marsh from Line 14 on July 27, 2012 . Enbridge detected the spill using pressure monitors and shut the line down. Enbridge reported that the spill was contained to a field affecting 5 or 6 acres. Residents reported waking up to a smell the next morning, without being told what was happening. The immediate neighbor was evacuated. 17,000 tons of contaminated soil was eventually removed. Line 14 was installed in 1998 and was inspected twice in the five years prior to the spill.
